What is an AVIF file? Everything you need to know about the AVIF format

An AVIF file is an image stored in the AV1 Image File Format. It uses compression derived from the AV1 video codec to produce small files while retaining strong visual quality. AVIF supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, animation, high dynamic range (HDR), and wide color gamuts.

How does AVIF work?

AVIF stores AV1-compressed image data in a HEIF-based container. The encoder divides an image into blocks, predicts pixel values from neighboring blocks, and records the differences. This takes more processing than older JPEG encoding, but can preserve comparable detail in fewer bytes.

The container can also hold color profiles, metadata, alpha transparency, image sequences, and multiple related images. That makes AVIF more capable than its .avif extension may suggest.

Benefits of AVIF

  • Efficient compression: useful when image transfer size affects page speed or bandwidth cost.
  • Modern color: supports HDR, wide color gamut, and higher bit depths.
  • Transparency: can replace PNG in workflows that need an alpha channel.
  • Flexible encoding: supports lossy and lossless images as well as animation.
  • Open ecosystem: AV1 was developed by the Alliance for Open Media.

Limitations of AVIF

AVIF normally takes longer to encode than JPEG or WebP. Some older browsers, operating systems, image editors, and content-management tools cannot decode it. AVIF also lacks JPEG-style progressive rendering, so a large image may not show a coarse preview while it downloads.

For public websites, consider serving AVIF with a WebP or JPEG fallback when legacy clients matter.
