What is a WAV file? Everything you need to know about the WAV format

A WAV file is an audio container based on Microsoft and IBM’s Resource Interchange File Format. Most WAV files store uncompressed pulse-code modulation (PCM) audio, which is why they are associated with high quality and large file sizes. WAV can carry other codecs, so the extension alone does not strictly guarantee uncompressed audio.

How does WAV work?

A WAV file is divided into chunks. A format chunk describes the codec, sample rate, bit depth, and channel count; a data chunk stores the audio samples. Additional chunks can contain broadcast metadata, cue points, labels, or other production information.

For PCM audio, file size grows predictably with duration, sample rate, bit depth, and channels. A minute of stereo 44.1 kHz, 16-bit PCM audio takes roughly 10 MB before filesystem and metadata overhead.

Benefits of WAV

  • Editing quality: PCM avoids lossy compression artifacts and generational loss.
  • Simple decoding: production software and audio tools support WAV broadly.
  • Precise samples: useful for recording, editing, analysis, and machine-learning inputs.
  • Production metadata: Broadcast Wave extensions can carry timestamps and descriptive fields.

Limitations of WAV

Uncompressed WAV consumes far more storage and bandwidth than MP3, AAC, Opus, or FLAC. Browser support for basic PCM WAV is broad, but unusual codecs inside WAV may fail. Some older tooling also has practical file-size limits based on the original RIFF structure.

Use WAV as an ingest, editing, or interchange format. Create a compressed derivative for public delivery unless exact samples are required.

WAV FAQ

Is every WAV file uncompressed?

No. PCM is by far the most common payload, but WAV is a container and can carry compressed codecs.

Why are WAV files so large?

PCM stores every sampled amplitude directly. Higher sample rates, bit depths, channel counts, and durations all increase the amount of data.

WAV or FLAC: which is better?

Both can preserve audio exactly. WAV is simpler and deeply established in production tools; FLAC uses lossless compression to reduce storage and transfer size.
